Baby - Introduction to solids

Breastmilk is the most important food for your baby until 12 months of age.

If for any reason breastfeeding is discontinued before your baby is 12 months of age, a commercial infant formula should be used as her main source of milk.

Introducing solids

Around six months of age, infants are physiologically and developmentally ready to start trying new foods. Introduction of solid foods will help give them extra nutrition and also develop their eating skills.

This can be a happy fun time for you and your baby.

Extra care with food safety is needed for infants up to 12 months of age. If you follow the guildelines provided by health professionals you can introduce solids to your infant with some confidence. Refer to the links provided on this page for information on how you can safely introduce solids to your infant, in what frequency and in what time.

It is also recommended that you discuss any allergies and any other concerns with your Child Health Nurse, GP or an Accredited Practising Dietician before commencing the introduction of solids.
