Baby safety
Newborn to six month old babies
Young babies need special protection and a safe environment. Because your baby will learn new skills very quickly you will need to stay one step ahead of her to keep her safe. If you know what your baby can do at each stage of her development this can help you to protect her from harm.

Six month old to 12 month old babies
Your older baby will suddenly discover how wonderful life is when she starts to crawl. She doesn't understand danger or the word "no" and will need you to be constantly at her side.
To prepare yourself and your home for when she starts crawling you should read the Toddler Safety section on this web-site.

Understanding basic first aid is essential if you are a parent
It is vital that all parents learn basic first aid. In the case of accident, all parents and carers need to have some basic knowledge on how to save their own or another child's life while waiting for an ambulance.
Child car restraints and safeguarding your baby
You must use a correctly fitted child car restraint when transporting your baby or any child in a moving vehicle. The use of child car restraints significantly reduces the risk of death or serious injury in road crashes.
It is important to make sure that your child's car restraint is fitted correctly, and is the right one for your child. Research has shown that as many as one in three restraints are fitted incorrectly, which can lead to an increased risk of injury, and of that injury being more serious.
For more information on child car restraints, including advice on which to use for your child, go to www.childcarrestraints.com.au or call the Child Restraint Information Line on 1300 780 713.
If you would like your car restraint checked contact the Road Safety Officer in your area or email roadwisegs@westnet.com.au.
